Memories of Nature ( series) 2018
Sophie Beer
silver 925, rubberbands, laquer, construction, double pinned closure
The series looks at how we take our everyday culture for granted. The apparent continuity of our rituals, food production and climatic conditions is juxtaposed to the ephemerality of life and the loss of original knowledge. The series celebrates how well we are doing when we can allow ourselves to produce more than just life preserving products, but also add value in aesthetic and conceptual input. At the same time, the most basic things in our lives are changing. In the field of tension between change and continuity, the pieces of jewellery speak of appreciation and the question of what is really essential and sustainable. This dichotomy is reflected by the different characteristics of the materials (silver, rubber bands) and the attempt to bring them into a stable / equal state. The failure of this state, the continuous change and the finite nature of the material are inherent.
